Residents are likely to have several reasons for being nutritionally at risk. These include a lack of nutritional knowledge and outdated ideas about diabetic diets held by some staff. It is vital that up-to-date information about diabetes and healthy eating be given to care home staff, especially those who have responsibility for menu planning, food purchasing and cooking.
The local community dietitian (where available) will usually be a good source of help and advice in implementing healthy eating policies. They may often be able to help in staff training on the dietary aspects of diabetes care.
