Reaven, at his Banting Lecture in 1988 (3), first proposed a widespread role for insulin resistance in common diseases such as coronary heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, obesity and hypertension. He proposed an insulin resistance syndrome (IRS) (or Syndrome X) as a unifying theory for a cluster of adverse metabolic changes (Table 9.1).
