Although the data for the effectiveness of obesity interventions for childhood are poor there are some suggestions that family based approaches to changes in diet and physical activity may be beneficial. The main goals of management will depend on the age of the child and an age-based, step-wise approach should be pursued. Advice needs to be given on an individual basis but the aim should be to introduce small but sustainable lifestyle changes in diet and physical activity to achieve a gradual improvement in BMI (Barlow and Dietz, 2000). The whole family should be involved and needs to provide support for their child during this process.
