You need to look at your feet every day. At the first sign of any skin breakdown or other abnormality (such as discoloration), you must see your doctor. In diabetes, foot problems can go from minor to major in a very brief time. We don't pull punches in this area, because seeing your doctor is so important major problems may mean amputation of toes or more. When you learned that your child has diabetes, you may have experienced disbelief, grief, and guilt. Through this intervention, patients learn and practice ways of challenging negative thoughts and altering their environment and behavior in order to stop engaging in eating disorder behavior. The presence of a medical condition, such as diabetes, can adversely affect the body image and self-concept of some women and contribute to a lowering of mood. Those with the onset of diabetes during or prior to childbearing years may worry about their partner's reaction to the condition, its influence on their ability to bear children or the genetic transmission of the disease. Having a chronic medical condition can also contribute to a lack of a sense of control or predictability in relation to the body, to feelings of bodily defectiveness, or to enduring feelings of grief and unfairness related to the diagnosis and burden of the disease. These factors, together with the multiple and complex daily tasks of diabetes management, the difficulty optimizing blood sugar levels the family strain related to managing diabetes, and the risk of diabetes-related medical complications, all may contribute to feelings of frustration, helplessness and depression.
When you are diagnosed with a chronic illness like diabetes, you may go through a period of grief because of the loss of good health. The diagnosis can be overwhelming there is a lot of information that you need to grasp you have to learn about carbohydrates, calories, exercise, weight management, and checking blood glucose levels. You may need to take oral medications or inject insulin. You may also have some or all of these questions Clinical research shows that people who have a strong support network go through these phases of grief better than those who try to do it alone. The support can be emotional (for example, someone to lean on when you are discouraged) or practical (for example, help treating low glucose levels, assistance with meal plans, or an exercise partner who provides encouragement to stick with an exercise plan).
There may be a feeling of loss with regard to ones physical and or mental faculties, to relationships with others or to inanimate objects such as ones home or other possessions. Normally, a grief reaction occurs, with phases of denial, anger and depression leading to a level of acceptance sufficient to allow a relatively normal life to be resumed. However, adjustment to impairment is sometimes abnormal. For example, 20 of people have severe and often persistent depression following acute myocardial infarction (Leng 1994). Several studies have documented high levels of psychosocial dysfunction in people following a stroke (Ahlsio et al 1984 Schmidt et al 1986) even despite participation in a rehabilitation program (Young and Forster 1992).
When a child is diagnosed with IDDM during the first 2 years of life, the parent(s) or caregiver(s) become the real 'patient'. The grief experienced by parents of infants after diagnosis is often stronger and more emotionally disruptive than when a child is diagnosed at an older age because parents of young infants have more recently celebrated the birth of a 'healthy, perfect' child. In addition, infants are more often critically ill at diagnosis, and the parents may have witnessed their child being cared for in an intensive care unit. This heightens the trauma already experienced by the parents, and emphasizes the vulnerability of their child, as well as the seriousness of diabetes. After the acute crisis abates, the parents of a very small child are now faced with the reality and implications of the diagnosis.
