Mechanism Of Gi Complications In Diabetes

The presence of GI symptoms in patients with diabetes does not correlate with glycemic control (assessed by measurement of HbA1c) at the time of presentation. Good glycemic control at the time of presentation may reflect poor caloric intake secondary to gastroparesis or malabsorption secondary to diarrhea. However, a history of poor glycemic control seems to be more closely associated with GI symptoms than does the presence of diabetic complications such as peripheral or autonomic neuropathy (assessed by tests of cardiovascular autonomic function).
