FFAs constitute an important source of energy for a variety of cells throughout the body, released from the adipose tissue when demand for fuel rises (143). They enhance basal and insulin-stimulated insulin secretion, and are essential for nutrient-induced insulin secretion by ^-cells (26,144). However, chronically elevated FFAs may contribute to peripheral and hepatic insulin resistance (121,145), as well as to ^-cell dysfunction in type 2 diabetes (146) (Fig. 3 and Color Plate 4, following p. 34).
