To determine the effects of medications or dietary supplements, I first determined my body's basic response to a glucose stimulus. This glucose response test was then repeated after some period of time, usually 2 to 3 weeks, during which the medication or the supplement under test was used. Individuals with diabetes should be advised about the importance of acquiring daily vitamin and mineral requirements from natural food sources. Regular consumption of a variety of vegetables, fresh fruit (five or more servings of vegetables or fruits per day), legumes, low-fat milk, vegetable oils, nuts, whole-grain breads, and oily fish should be encouraged to ensure that recommended intakes are met (8,14). On the other hand, people with diabetes should be advised to restrict salt intake to under 6 g day, particularly when elevated blood pressure is a problem.

This association was particularly striking in the subgroup of 21 809 women who did not consume vitamin supplements (relative risks from lowest to highest quintile of vitamin E intake, 1.0, 0.68, 0.71, 0.42 and 0.42 P for trend 0.008). After adjustment for possible confounding variables, this inverse association remained (relative risks from lowest to highest quintile, 1.0, 0.70, 0.76, 0.32 and 0.38 P for trend 0.004). By contrast, the intake of vitamins A and C was not associated with lower risks of dying from coronary disease.38

Nutrients That Can Help

Some physicians have become receptive to nutritional therapies because vitamin supplements relieved or eliminated their own allergies. For example, Robert Cathcart III, M.D., was impressed by how vitamin C supplements relieved his hay fever, and he went on to become one of the leading experts in the clinical use of vitamin C to fight infections. A large variety of nutritional supplements might help, but you will have to experiment to find the best combination for your particular body and allergies. Vitamin C (1 to 5 grams daily), quercetin (300 to 1,000 mg daily), and omega-3 fish oils (1 to 3 grams daily) make a good start. Several B vitamins, including niacinamide, pantothenic acid, and vitamins B and B12, also may help relieve allergies a B-complex supplement may be better than individual supplements. Again, do whatever you can to reduce exposure, such as using air conditioning and high-efficiency air filters.

SEARCH and HPS II will randomize subjects to various vitamin supplements or placebo to examine whether these relatively inexpensive interventions provide clinical benefit to reduce CVD as well.

What Else Might Help

It is of utmost importance to follow a diet that emphasizes nutrient density, such as the Anti-Inflammation Syndrome Diet Plan, which emphasizes fish, lean meats, and large amounts of fresh vegetables. Diets high in refined carbohydrates, sugars, and partially hydrogenated vegetable oils set the stage for insulin resistance and overweight, which increase the risk of pre- and full-blown diabetes and heart disease.
