The third reason for the dearth of clinical trials that study lifestyle interventions is that there are no federal regulations governing lifestyle interventions. This association was particularly striking in the subgroup of 21 809 women who did not consume vitamin supplements (relative risks from lowest to highest quintile of vitamin E intake, 1.0, 0.68, 0.71, 0.42 and 0.42 P for trend 0.008). After adjustment for possible confounding variables, this inverse association remained (relative risks from lowest to highest quintile, 1.0, 0.70, 0.76, 0.32 and 0.38 P for trend 0.004). By contrast, the intake of vitamins A and C was not associated with lower risks of dying from coronary disease.38
Some physicians have become receptive to nutritional therapies because vitamin supplements relieved or eliminated their own allergies. For example, Robert Cathcart III, M.D., was impressed by how vitamin C supplements relieved his hay fever, and he went on to become one of the leading experts in the clinical use of vitamin C to fight infections. A large variety of nutritional supplements might help, but you will have to experiment to find the best combination for your particular body and allergies. Vitamin C (1 to 5 grams daily), quercetin (300 to 1,000 mg daily), and omega-3 fish oils (1 to 3 grams daily) make a good start. SEARCH and HPS II will randomize subjects to various vitamin supplements or placebo to examine whether these relatively inexpensive interventions provide clinical benefit to reduce CVD as well.
