Enjoying Hemingway Country The Florida Keys

We are back in the southeastern United States, taking a wonderful ride from Key Largo to Key West, where Hemingway made his home. There is water on either side of the road and plenty of beautiful beaches to stop at. The distance is 106 miles, but we will take three days, since we want to do plenty of swimming and other water sports. The entire trip is on US 1. We begin in Florida City and head south.

We stop in Key Largo for some snorkeling and then have lunch. Cait has already selected a Subway Restaurant right along US 1 in Key Largo. She has checked the nutritional information, which is pretty complete. Subway very nicely lists their food by grams of fat. In the 6-grams-of-fat or less column, there are plenty of sandwiches to choose from. The only problem is that they all have a fair amount of sodium.

Cait suggests we share a sandwich, and you suggest we buy two sandwiches and cut them in three pieces, then each have two of the pieces. Great idea! That reduces both the calories and the salt by >3. But we can't get the foot-long sandwiches, which just have too much salt, even if we share them. You like the 6-inch Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki, and Cait likes the 6-inch Veggie Delite. I like everything. Not bad at all and no trans fats. The total we each end up with is about 200 kilocalories with 33g of carbohydrate, 17g of protein, and 3g of fat.

We continue to Tavernier, where we stop at the Florida Keys Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center and then go on to Lignumvitae Key Botanical State Park, to which we take a boat. Finally we arrive in Long Key, where we are staying, and have dinner at the hotel.

The following morning we do some snorkeling and then head to Grassy Key in the city of Marathon, where we visit the Dolphin Research Center. We are all hungry for some breakfast, so Cait suggests the IHOP along US 1 in Marathon.

Cait suggests either a couple of buttermilk pancakes, a couple of harvest grain 'n nut pancakes, a couple of buckwheat pancakes, or a waffle. Each of these contains about 225 kilocalories with 6g of fat and 34g of carbohydrate. Of course, we have to have some pancake syrup but go very light on this. Still, it adds another 115 kilocalories from 29g of carbohydrate. Four ounces of orange juice adds an additional 15g of carbohydrate. I drink tea, but you and Cait have your morning coffee.

We continue to Bahia Honda Key and the Bahia Honda State Park for some hiking. We follow the road a few more miles to Big Pine Key, where we are staying, and have dinner and breakfast in our hotel.

Next morning we continue to Key West, where we visit the Hemingway Home and Museum and the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum, which houses a fascinating collection of artifacts from the sunken Spanish galleon, Atocha. Then it's off to Mallory Square to celebrate the sunset.
